Ripping Off the White Guy

It's never dull being a Gweilo in Hong Kong. Different people treat us in different ways—most locals respect foreigners, though many surely think we're just rich and gullible. Recently I had to replace an AC adapter, so I ducked down to the Golden Computer Arcade. It's a great place to get IT gear, so long as you know what you should be paying. Most stores have product prices displayed but for more obscure components, you need to ask. And, sometimes, the prices they quote are just silly, such as when I bought the AC adapter:
Me: Hi, I need to buy one of these AC adapters.
Her: Ok sir, $250.
Me: $250!? But I bought one here last week for $120.
Her: Oh yeah? Do you have a receipt?
Me: Um... (check my wallet) ...actually I do.
Her: What? Let me see... Oooh, sorry.
It made me laugh.
